What to know about California

California gives you no trade-in credit at all. If you hand over a car worth $10,000 toward a $30,000 purchase, you still pay tax on the full $30,000. That is unusual and it costs real money. The rate is set by where you register the car, not where you buy it, and district taxes push some cities past 10.25 percent. Manufacturer rebates do not reduce the taxable price either.
