What to know about New York

The rate follows where you live, not where you buy, so a Manhattan resident pays 8.875 percent even when buying upstate. Trade-in credit applies to dealer purchases; in a private swap the value of what you hand over counts as part of the price. New York gives reciprocal credit for tax paid to only a short list of states, so buying elsewhere can mean paying twice.
