What to know about South Dakota

The 4 percent excise replaces both state and municipal sales tax, so nothing is added on top. Dealers do not collect it; you pay the county treasurer within 45 days. Trade-in credit works in private sales too. If you already paid a similar tax in any other state, South Dakota charges you nothing.
