What to know about Illinois

This calculator covers a dealer purchase. Private-party sales work completely differently: instead of a percentage you pay a flat amount from a table, based on the car’s age if the price is under $15,000 or on the price if it is $15,000 or more. A two-year-old car costs $365 no matter what you paid. Chicago and Cook County add flat amounts on top, and no trade-in deduction is allowed on a private sale. The dealer-sale trade-in cap of $10,000 was removed in 2022.
