Manufacturer’s base retail price (USD)

Arizona starts from the base retail price when the vehicle was new, not what you paid. The $2.80 new-vehicle rate applies in the first year and the $2.89 used-vehicle rate applies after that, matching the ADOT worked example.

How Arizona calculates the Vehicle License Tax

Arizona charges no county or city surcharge. The Vehicle License Tax is set statewide and then distributed to local governments.

Renewal cycle

Renewal cycle: annual, with 1-year, 2-year and 5-year options.

Arizona registers most vehicles for one year by default. If the vehicle is not subject to emissions testing you may choose two or five years instead, and the fees are simply multiplied with no discount. The Vehicle License Tax is an annual charge, so a five-year registration collects five years of it up front.

Ariz. Rev. Stat. § 28-2159(E) — “The vehicle owner has a choice of registering the vehicle for one year, for two years or for five years.”
