How Missouri calculates registration

Missouri is one of the very few states that still prices registration by taxable horsepower rather than weight or value, so most modern cars land in the top band. There is no depreciation schedule, and electric vehicles are charged at the lowest rate.

Renewal cycle: annual (2-year option available).

Missouri also sells a two-year registration. Both the plate fee and the processing fee double, so the processing fee is $18 rather than $9. Missouri DOR Form 1659 — “Applicant must include a $18.00 processing fee for each two-year registration.”
