Louisiana bases the plate fee on the value at purchase and bills two years at a time.
The statute fixes the value at the time of purchase or first renewal and uses that same figure for every renewal afterward. There is no depreciation. A vehicle worth $10,000 or less pays the $10 minimum, which becomes $20 for the two-year plate.
Amounts of $500 or more round up to the next $1,000 and amounts under $500 are ignored, which is why the fee moves in $1 steps.
The electric and hybrid road usage fees are not part of the registration tax. Through 2025 they were paid to the Department of Revenue with your income tax return. Starting in 2026 the Office of Motor Vehicles collects them instead.
A local fee of up to $6 may also apply depending on the parish.
Renewal cycle: every two years for passenger cars.
Louisiana sells passenger plates in two-year increments, so the totals on this page are two-year amounts. The statute sets an annual rate but collects two years in advance, which is why the $10 minimum becomes $20. Pickup trucks and motorcycles run on a four-year cycle instead.
La. Rev. Stat. § 47:463(A)(1) — “an annual registration license shall be collected each two years in advance”
Estimates only. The Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles issues the final bill. This page does not collect or store anything you enter.
