Just bought the car? Registration is only part of it. You also owe sales tax on the purchase.
Set by MCL 257.801(1)(p). Vehicles from before the 1984 model year are charged by empty weight instead, starting at $29 for 3,000 pounds or less.

A note on the electric vehicle fee
The statute sets the electric vehicle surcharge at $100 and the plug-in hybrid surcharge at $30 for vehicles of 8,000 pounds or less. It then adds an escalator: for every cent that the state gasoline tax sits above 19 cents per gallon, the electric vehicle fee rises by $5.00 and the plug-in hybrid fee by $2.50. Michigan’s gas tax is above that threshold, so the amount actually collected is higher than the figure written in the law. The statute does not publish a final number.
Registrations also carry a $2.25 regulatory fee and a $5.75 transportation administration collection fee through October 1, 2027.
Renewal cycle
Renewal cycle: annual, expiring on the owner’s birthday.
Michigan registration expires on the owner’s birthday. Since October 2022 you may ask for a two-year registration instead, and it costs exactly twice the one-year amount. The ad valorem fee is based on 12-month periods.
Mich. Comp. Laws § 257.226 — “For a renewal of a registration that is for more than 12 months, 2 times the amount for 12 months.”
