One quirk

The weight Iowa uses includes the battery, heater, bumpers, spare tire and wheel. That is written into the statute, so a curb weight from a spec sheet is usually close enough but not identical.

Renewal cycle

Renewal cycle: annual, prorated by month on a first registration.

Iowa registration runs for one year. When you first register a vehicle the fee is prorated for the months left in the registration year, so a first-year bill is often lower than the figures here.

Iowa Code § 321.106(3) — “the annual registration fee shall be prorated for the remaining unexpired months of the registration year”
