A note on the electric vehicle fee

The statute sets the electric vehicle surcharge at $100 and the plug-in hybrid surcharge at $30 for vehicles of 8,000 pounds or less. It then adds an escalator: for every cent that the state gasoline tax sits above 19 cents per gallon, the electric vehicle fee rises by $5.00 and the plug-in hybrid fee by $2.50. Michigan’s gas tax is above that threshold, so the amount actually collected is higher than the figure written in the law. The statute does not publish a final number.

Registrations also carry a $2.25 regulatory fee and a $5.75 transportation administration collection fee through October 1, 2027.
